Over 1,000 Free Books!
Dollar Bay, MI - May 15, 2024 - Dollar Bay-Tamarack City Area Schools Elementary students gathered in the gymnasium to celebrate a significant addition to their library and classrooms: more than 1,000 new books for students of all ages. This event, made possible by the Classroom Library Enhancement Grant, will support a love for reading among students.
During the celebration, students clapped and cheered as they explored tables lined with new books. Teachers read passages from some of their new favorites stories, and Superintendent and Elementary Principal, Christina Norland, captivated the audience with a reading of The Smallest Girl in the Smallest Grade by Justin Roberts.
The grant is the result of a collaborative effort between the Copper Country Intermediate School District (CCISD) and Dollar Bay-Tamarack City Area Schools. Spearheaded by 3rd grade teacher Dan Stahl, the grant supports the purchase of books for children of all ages and all interests. Students will have access to the books through their classrooms and be able to check them out in the public library throughout the summer.
"We chose books that our students were interested in,” said Stahl. “We wanted to make sure that every kid has a book they can get their hands on, enjoy, and read. Everyone is super excited. The biggest thing I want the kids to get out of this is to read. I want to get them to love reading even more.”
Christina Norland added, "This grant has opened up a world of opportunities for our students. By enriching our library and classrooms with such a great collection of books, we are supporting our culture of reading that will benefit our students for years to come. Seeing the excitement and joy on our students' faces was so wonderful."
The Dollar Bay-Tamarack City Area Schools community is grateful for the support, and looks forward to many more literary adventures.
